Campbell Starts New Year With a Bang
Jan. 1, 2018

CHICAGO – What a way to start the New Year with the bright lights of the BIG EAST Conference illuminating the superb all-around play of Kelly Campbell.

On Monday, Campbell was singled out as the BIG EAST Player of the Week after coming one assist shy of consecutive triple-doubles last week.

The sophomore guard led the Blue Demons to back-to-back wins to open the BIG EAST calendar by averaging a triple-double against Seton Hall and St. John’s.

Campbell notched her first career triple-double and first by a BIG EAST player since Feb. 26, 2017 when she went for 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in last Thursday’s 89-66 win over Seton Hall in which the Blue Demons tied a program record with 19 three-pointers.

Not resting on that laurel, she followed up with 10 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists two days later in a 76-67 victory over St. John’s to average 10.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 10.0 assists on the week.

Campbell was one assist shy of becoming the first BIG EAST player in to record triple-doubles in back-to-back games. She added six total steals and .538 shooting, including a .556 clip from deep in the two opening conference games.

This is Kelly’s first career BIG EAST Player of the Week honor, and she will continue the tradition established by coach Doug Bruno of doing something for her teammates for helping her attain such an honor.

On the season, Campbell is averaging nearly 11 points a game and leads the team in rebounds, assists, steals, free throw percentage and minutes played. The well-balanced Blue Demons have six players averaging in double figures led by Ashton Millender at 14.6 points per game.

DePaul (10-4, 2-0) is headed for a BIG EAST first-place showdown on Thursday when Campbell & Co. collide with preseason favorite Marquette (8-5, 2-0) at 7 p.m. in Milwaukee. That game will be televised by NBC Sports Chicago.
