DePaul (10-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) and Creighton (8-6, 2-0 BIG EAST) are meeting for the first time as conference foes and just the fourth time ever. The two teams met, three times during the 1980s and DePaul owns a 2-1 series advantage. The Bluejays lone series win, came at a game in Omaha during the 1987-88 season.
DePaul is coming off an impressive, 87-60 BIG EAST win over Xavier on Jan. 1. The Blue Demons were led by Jasmine Penny’s 27 points, Brittany Hrynko’s 19 and Jessica January’s 13.
Penny has led the Blue Demons in scoring the last three games and in six games this season. The senior, leads five DePaul players in double-figures with 15.7 points which ranks sixth in the BIG EAST. A proficient shooter, the Logansport, Ind., native is second in the BIG EAST with her .624 field goal percentage which also ranked 15th in Division I.
Penny became DePaul’s 29th 1,000-point scorer in the Blue Demon’s Dec. 29th triumph at Bradley. Hrynko is also looking to join the 1,000-point club and needs just one point to reach that milestone. For the season, Hrynko is averaging 11.3 points, while she leads the team with 5.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game.
Creighton opened its inaugural season in the BIG EAST with a win over Villanova and most recently a 65-63 overtime victory at Georgetown.
The Bluejays are led by Marissa Janning and Sarah Neslon. The duo has combined for just over 48 percent of the team’s scoring, while Janning leads Creighton in scoring (15.9), 3-pointers (32), assists (53) and free throw percentage (.866). Nelson paces the Bluejays in 3-point field goal percentage (.355), rebounds (6.6) and steals (16).
Following DePaul’s game at Creighton, the Blue Demons returns to Lincoln Park and will host Providence on Jan. 8 and St. John’s on Jan.11. Both of those games will be televised in Chicago on Lakeshore Public Television.
