DePaul Falls to St. John's at Home
CHICAGO - DePaul's eight-game home winning streak came to an end as St. John's defeated the Blue Demons 68-51 in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday at McGrath Arena.
DePaul (12-6, 1-3 BIG EAST) was led by Sam Quigley's 14 points, while Felicia Chester chipped in 10 and six rebounds. Taylor Pikes added a season-high seven rebounds and eight points.
Turnovers plagued the Blue Demons as they tied a season-high with 26 compared to just 16 for the Red Storm. St. John's (15-3, 3-2 BIG EAST) tied a season-high with 16 steals in the game, while Nadirah McKeninth led the way with four takeaways.
Both teams started hot as the Red Storm hit their first three shots and DePaul was 2-for-3 from the field. With the teams running on all cylinders, the lead changed hands twice, and Da'Shena Stevens jumper gave the Red Storm a 7-6 advantage.
Chester would tie the game at seven by hitting the first of two free throws, but on the Red Storm's next trip down the floor, Steven's gave St. John the lead for good on a fast break layup with 16:54 left in the first half.
St. John's extended its lead to 29-21 on McKeninth's 10 foot jumper with 5:32 left to play in the half. DePaul cut into the Red Storm lead by closing out the half on a 7-4 run.
The Red Storm opened the half on a 5-0 run, before the Blue Demons countered with a run of their own. Down 41-34, Quigley found Pikes, who drained a 3-pointer from right side. On DePaul's next trip, Pikes got a huge offensive rebound and Chester converted into a layup which pulled the Blue Demons within two, 41-39 with 13:54 left on the clock.
St. John's again answered over the next 2:49 and stretched its lead to eight points on a pair of free throw by Joy McCorvey.
Pikes pulled the momentum in DePaul's favor with another big 3-pointer and Quigley's dribble-drive into the paint, cut the Red Strom lead to 49-44 with 8:51 on the clock.
St. John's pushed the tempo and DePaul went cold from the field as the Red Storm closed out the game on a 19-7 run.
The Blue Demons hit the road for a mini two-game road trip next week. DePaul plays at Seton Hall on Jan. 19 and then travels to Georgetown for a game on the 23rd.
