Blue Demons Roll Over Memphis
CHICAGO - Entering the game undefeated in Conference USA play, the DePaul women's basketball team didn't change a thing as they knocked off Memphis, 80-59, on Friday night at the DePaul Athletic Center. Lenae Williams led DePaul (11-6, 4-0 C-USA) with 16 points while Yolanda Lewis added 13 and Jamie Smith chipped in 12 points. The Blue Demons are off to their best conference start since going 6-0 at the beginning of the 1995-96 C-USA season.
The Blue Demons didn't waste time and jumped out to a 13-4 lead in just under five minutes. The advantage extended to 21-10 on a Lindsay Forsberg three-pointer with 9:23 left in the half. Forsberg's three started a 19-5 run over six-and-a-half minutes which ended with DePaul leading 40-15 with just under three minutes left in the half.
Memphis (8-9, 2-2) opened the second stanza with a 13-4 run to close the Blue Demon lead to 47-35. The lead shrank to eight points at 4:46, but that was as close as the Tigers would get as DePaul finished the game by scoring 16 of the final 19 points.
Offensively, the scoring was balanced as seven of the nine players finished the game with at least eight points. Williams' 16 points extended her streak of reaching double-fiugres to 25 games. She also dished out four assists and grabbed pair of rebounds. Laura Sobieszczyk tallied team-high's of six rebounds and six assists while scoring eight points. Smith also pulled down six boards for the Blue Demons.
DePaul continues the Conference USA weekend on Sunday against Saint Louis. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the DePaul Athletic Center. The game can be heard live at www.depaulbluedemons.com.
