Blue Demons Cruise Pass Providence



CHICAGO Led by Natasha Williams’ 21 points, the DePaul women’s basketball team topped Providence 87-64, Saturday in BIG EAST Conference action at McGrath Arena. 

The Blue Demons (14-5, 2-3 BIG EAST) shot 63 percent in the first half and finished the game just over 50 percent.  Keisha Hampton registered her first career double-double with 17 points and a team-high 10 boards while Felicia Chester added 11 points to round out DePaul’s double-digit scorers.

DePaul controlled the tempo of the game with its hot shooting and raced out to a 14-6 advantage as each of the Blue Demon starters -- Sam Quigley, Deirdre Naughton, Williams, Hampton and Chester scored in the opening five-and-a-half minutes.

With an eight-point lead, the Blue Demons went on a 21-5 run over the next seven minutes and pulled ahead 33-11 with 7:14 left in the half.

DePaul controlled the final seven minutes of the half and went to the locker room with a 43-29 lead.

Hampton drained a 3-pointer with 15:10 left in game to give DePaul a 59-39 advantage; its first 20 point lead of the second half.  The Blue Demons sustained its 20-point lead and went up by 29 on Danielle Havel’s free throws.

DePaul outscored Providence in the paint 50-32, while 18 of Williams’ points were in the paint.  With the Blue Demons getting the ball in the paint, the team combined for 22 assists. Naughton dished out a career-high 12 assists and became the first Blue Demon in 132 games to eclipse the 10 assist mark. 

Chelsea Marandola led Providence with 15 points while Trinity Hull and Catherine Bove also finished in double-digit for the Friars. 

The Blue Demons return to the court Sat., Jan. 24 when Rutgers visits Lincoln Park.  Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. at McGrath Arena.

Notes: With 12 assists Diedre Naughton became the first player to register 10 or more assists since Jenni Dant recorded 11 against Charlotte on Jan. 16, 2005... it has been 132 games since Dant’s double-digit assists... With 21 points and for the third time in as many games, Natasha Williams finished with 20+ points... she has recorded 20+ points nine times in her career... Keisha Hampton recorded her first career double-double... 17 points and 10 rebounds... it is her 12th career game in double figures... DePaul has hit a three in its last 125 games... the Blue Demons finished the game with 5 3's (5-for-14)... since 2003-04 season the Blue Demons have held (112-178) opponents to under 70 points... DePaul is 98-14 when holding opponets to under 70 points... DePaul now leads the all-time series 5-2... The Blue Demons have won all four BIG EAST contests.
