DePaul Drops Second Straight
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Shannon Hamp scored 20 points and Princess Swilley added 17 as Memphis scored the first 10 points of the game and then held on for a 64-58 victory over No. 25 DePaul on Sunday.
Memphis (9-9, 2-3 Conference USA) never trailed as it won its third straight overall and second consecutive in the conference after losing 10 straight dating to last season.
The Blue Demons (14-6, 3-2) dropped their second in a row.
Memphis preserved the victory by going 6-of-8 from the free throw line over the final 41 seconds, including five by Swilley.
Ashley Luke led DePaul with 16 points, including 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, while Charlene Smith added 14.
Jordie Soso finished with 12 points, 10 in the first half as Memphis built an 18-point lead.
Memphis outrebounded DePaul 34-30 for the game after being up 17-8 at halftime.
The Blue Demons, who missed eight of their first nine shots, used a 14-2 run midway through the first half to get within 27-21 with just under four minutes to play. In the stretch, Memphis went four minutes without scoring.
Memphis led 36-23 at halftime after shooting 60 percent from the field.
DePaul got within three points on several occasions, the last time when Luke made two free throws with 20 seconds left.
But Swilley made three free throws to hold off the Blue Demons.
