Blue Demons Win Third Straight
CHICAGO – Behind 32 points from Khara Smith, the DePaul women’s basketball team posted a 73-65 win over visiting Saint Louis on Friday night. The win kept the Blue Demons tied for first in the Conference USA standings with the Houston Cougars.
After the two teams started the game a combined 1-for-10 from the field, DePaul (21-2, 9-1 C-USA) jumped out to an 8-0 lead on buckets by the Smith cousins and a three-pointer by Ashley Luke.
Saint Louis answered and cut the deficit to 14-13 on a pair of free throws by Angie Lewis with 10:05 left in the first half. Lewis led Saint Louis (8-16, 2-9 C-USA) with 28 points and nine rebounds.
The Blue Demons scored 12 of the game’s next 16 points to take their largest lead of the first half with just under three minutes remaining. The Billikens didn’t back down as they trimmed the DePaul lead to six points and trailed, 34-27, at halftime.
A Sarah Kustok free throw at 12:49 gave the Blue Demons their largest lead of the game at 52-33. DePaul’s advantage didn’t dip below double-figures until a Yanique Javois lay-up made the score 65-57 with 1:18 left in the game.
In the final minute, the Blue Demons used free throws by Khara Smith, Dant and Luke to seal the 73-65 victory. The trio went a combined 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Khara Smith led all scorers with 32 points on 14-of-16 shooting from the field. The sophomore pulled down nine rebounds. Dant and Kustok both turned in solid performances with Dant adding 15 points and seven rebounds. Kustok finished with 11 points, six boards and five assists.
The Blue Demons play their final home game of the season on Sunday against the Memphis Tigers. Tipoff at the DePaul Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m. Kustok and Luke will be honored after their final home game in a DePaul uniform.
