Schulte Named BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of Year
Feb. 28, 2017

NEW YORK – For the sixth time in 12 seasons as a member of the BIG EAST Conference, a DePaul student-athlete has captured women’s basketball’s top academic honor, as senior guard Brooke Schulte was named the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Presented by Sunkist, on Tuesday. The selection was made by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee.

A senior from Germantown, Ill., Schulte will receive a $2,000 scholarship, which may be applied to graduate or professional studies. She is the fourth DePaul player in the last five seasons to be recognized following Anna Martin (2012-13), Brittany Hrynko (2014-15) and last season’s honoree Megan Podkowa (2015-16). Additional Blue Demon honorees include Jenna Rubino (’06-07) and Allie Quigley (’07-08).

Schulte carries a 3.676 grade point average pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences while minoring in psychology and biological sciences. She is a four-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree, including her medical redshirt year in 2012-13, and is on pace for her fifth certificate this season. Schulte is a 10-time Dean’s List choice and has been named to the Athletics Director Honor Roll every quarter at DePaul. Schulte has been a member of the WBCA Top 25 Team in four consecutive years.

On the court, Schulte became the second DePaul player to win the league’s scoring title, averaging 20.8 points per game over 18 conference contests. The senior guard also ranked in the top five in rebounding and field goal percentage among all BIG EAST players.

Schulte was crucial in the Blue Demons’ run to a fourth consecutive regular-season crown, stepping up in the wake of BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Jessica January’s injury in the conference opener on Dec. 28. Schulte bumped her scoring average from 11.2 points per game prior to January’s injury, to 21.6 without her fellow classmate in the lineup.  Schulte was named BIG EAST Player of the Week five times in 2016-17, the most of any player in the league.

Schulte is an active participant in the community as well, both on DePaul’s campus and in the city of Chicago. She is a member of the DePaul University Athletics Captain’s Council, which meets to discuss university and athletics business, policies and events. She frequently participates in events such as the Sheffield Garden Walk, St. Vincent DePaul Student Service Days, basketball clinics for children and annual toy and blanket drives. Schulte is also a Certified Nursing Assistant, earning the certification in the summer of 2016.

The BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is one of a number of scholarships presented by the BIG EAST Conference during the 2016-17 academic year. In addition, 20 student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST’s 10 member institutions) will receive postgraduate scholarships as the winners of their respective institutions’ Scholar-Athlete Award. The winners of the institutional awards are then eligible for the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, which provides an additional postgraduate scholarship to one male and one female student-athlete.
