Harry Helps Send DePaul to BIG EAST Quarterfinals, Blue Demons top Marquette
HARTFORD, Conn. - The DePaul women's basketball team opened the BIG EAST Conference Championship with a 64-54 victory over Marquette on Saturday at the XL Center. The Blue Demons face No. 8/7 West Virginia on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
Katherine Harry led a trio of Blue Demons in doubles digits with 17 points while Sam Quigley added 16 and Anna Martin finished with 15. Harry and Martin both paced DePaul with eight rebounds.
DePaul (21-10) used a balanced attack in its third meeting and third win over its rival Marquette this season. The Blue Demons shot 43 percent from the field, while Marquette struggled and were just 20-for-56 from floor.
The Blue Demons had no trouble finding the open player in the first 5:29 as six different players combined to score DePaul's first 12 points. All five Blue Demon starters got on the board before Martin came off the bench and knocked down a 10 foot jumper from the right side of the key.
DePaul jumped out to an early 12-4 lead and built a 22-11 advantage which forced a Golden Eagle timeout with 9:34 left in the half. The Blue Demons continued to run on cylinders and took its largest lead of the half, 27-13 lead on Felicia Chester's layup.
Marquette responded to the Blue Demon surge and closed out half on an 11-3 run -- but the Blue Demons went to locker room up 30-22 behind 10 points from Harry.
Quigley pushed DePaul back to a comfortable 10-point lead with a layup with just under 19 minutes remaining in the game.
Marquette cut the Blue Demon lead to 35-28 on Angel Robinson's a three-point play, but Quigley drained a layup and Martin hit a 3-pointer to put DePaul back up by double-figures.
The Blue Demons took a 53-37 advantage with 7:22 to play but the pesky Golden Eagles did not go away and used a 15-6 run over the next 6:01 to pull within seven again.
DePaul closed out the game hitting 10 of its last 14 free throws to seal the victory.
Paige Feidorowicz led Marquette with 17 points and Robinson added 15.
