March 26, 2014
CHICAGO - DePaul is all set for a festive send-off at 8:45 a.m. Thursday just before the women’s basketball team departs for Lincoln, Neb. in preparation for its NCAA tournament Sweet 16 showdown against No. 3 seed Texas A&M at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Ramping up the jubilant atmosphere at the Sullivan Athletic Center’s Hall of Fame Foyer will be members of the DePaul spirit squad and the Screamin’ Demons Band. DePaul President Rev. Dennis H. Holtschneider, C.M. will be on hand to wish the team well.
The Blue Demons are a No. 7 seed and are making their third appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16 and first since 2011. They have won nine games in a row and 18 of the last 19. Texas A&M is 26-8.
DePaul (29-6) has had one of the most successful seasons in recent history and set program records for points scored (2,941), 3-pointers (310) and assists (693) while the 29 wins ties for the most in school history (2010-11 season). The Blue Demons also won their first BIG EAST Conference regular-season and tournament titles.
Coach Doug Bruno’s team is one of just nine programs to appear in each of the last 12 NCAA tournaments. DePaul is joined in this elite company by Connecticut, Duke, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
Bruno’s program enters the regional semifinals having already claimed one national title. Last week, Inside Higher Ed announced that DePaul had won the academic national championship of the 64-team NCAA tournament field based on academic progress reports and graduation rate success.
