CHICAGO -- DePaul senior forward Keisha Hampton was the 22nd overall pick in the 2012 WNBA Draft. Hampton was selected by Seattle Storm in the second round.
“This is a dream come true,” Hampton said from Philadelphia after watching the draft show at home with her family. “I have wanted to play in the WNBA since I was younger and have tried to put in the hard work since day one and today my dream came true.”
“This is a great opportunity to be drafted even after missing my senior year. I appreciate Seattle giving me the opportunity and I look forward to training camp,” Hampton added.
Hampton, who played just 12 games during the 2011-12 season due to exploratory knee surgery, finished her DePaul career with 1,574 points, 568 rebounds and 227 assists.
“Keisha Hampton is one of the most versatile and best players ever to compete at DePaul,” Blue Demon head coach Doug Bruno said.
“Coach Brian Agler and the Seattle Storm are one of the most consistently best programs in the WNBA. The opportunity for Keisha to compete and ultimately play for the Seattle Storm is not only an opportunity to play for one of the WNBA’s best, but could ultimately also be a great match for Seattle as well.”
“Had Keisha not been injured this season, she probably would have been a top five pick in this year’s WNBA draft, so to get Keisha at 22, and with regained health, Keisha will be a steal for Seattle.”
“Keisha has been a great competitor with a multi-faceted skill set that helped DePaul reach our highest ranking in school history and has also been one of the most competitive and coachable players I have ever coached,” Bruno said in closing.
Prior to the 2011-12 season, Hampton won a gold medal with the USA World University Games team and was a unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST selection. The Philadelphia native was also named to the preseason -- Naismith Watch List, Wooden Award and Wade Watch top 30. She was also a preseason Associated Press honorable mention All-American after earning honorable mention All-American honors as a junior.
Hampton is DePaul’s eighth WNBA draft pick since 1997. She follows Felicia Chester, who was the 14th overall selection of the 2011 draft.
Hampton will see a familiar face in Seattle as former Blue Demon great and Joliet, Ill. native, Allie Quigley (2004-08) is currently on the Storm’s roster.
Hampton joins Shekinna Stricklen from Tennessee, who was the second overall pick of the draft.
