June 29, 2010
CHICAGO - In an "Operation Home Court" event on Monday, June 28, DePaul men's and women's basketball season ticket holders got the unique opportunity to meet basketball coaches Oliver Purnell and Doug Bruno at a Chicago Cubs Rooftop.
The event, held at Sports Corner's rooftop on the corner of Sheffield and Addison, brought together first-year season ticket holders as well Blue Demon season ticket holders for the last 30 plus years.
"We are really excited to see the passion people have for our basketball programs," Director of Athletics Jean Lenti Ponsetto said. "We have a storied tradition and not short on that list is our season ticket holders. "
"We are at an exciting beginning in the next chapter of our men's basketball history with the arrival of Coach Purnell and it is a great time to celebrate Coach Bruno's 25th year," Ponsetto added.
As the Cubs took a 1-1 tie into the ninth at Wrigley Field, DePaul fans exchanged stories of the past and looked forward to the 2010-11 basketball season.
Loren Kaszubowski, who was celebrating his 30th wedding anniversary with his wife Pat, gathered with friends, who the couple first met as season ticket holders at the old Alumni Hall and later at Allstate Arena.
"This is a about a rebirth of DePaul Basketball," Kaszubowski, a 1979 DePaul College of Law graduate said. "We are excited about this season and the future as we build the program back to a national power."
Meeting some of DePaul's most passionate fans Coach Purnell was overwhelmed with the enthusiastic crowd. "This is a great opportunity to get to know a lot of the people who are at the grassroots of our support. One of my main messages to them is to go out and get some more season ticket holders."
Between the third and fourth innings, coaches Purnell and Bruno along with Ponsetto addressed the nearly 250 people in attendance, thanking them for your support over the years and previewed the 2010-11 season.
Purnell highlighted his staff while Coach Bruno talked about the early challenges of the 2010-11 schedule.
"The best thing about July 4 is that you are only four months from tipoff," Coach Bruno said with a wide-eyed smile.
"We always love our great fan support at McGrath Arena," Bruno added. "Opening up the WNIT against Valparaiso on November 12 we will need all of our fans. A full house on the 12th will ensure that we host a home game in the second round."
As the Cubs faltered in the ninth and fell to the Pirates 2-1, DePaul's director of ticket sales Jay Finnerty remarked on the success of the Monday's event.
"Tonight's event was sold out in a day and a half," Finnerty said. "This rooftop is the first time we have ever done something like this and we are looking forward to doing more things like this in the future and during our other summer events"
