Five Programs Have Top GPA in the BIG EAST

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference has announced the 26 teams that have been recognized with 2010-11 Team Academic Excellence Awards recognizing the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport.
Eleven BIG EAST schools had at least one team honored and DePaul finished with a conference-best five teams recognized. Notre Dame and Syracuse had four teams recognized, while Cincinnati, Georgetown, Louisville and St. John’s had two each. Rutgers, Seton Hall and West Virginia were represented by one team each.
Since 2008-09, DePaul’s women’s basketball, golf, men’s soccer and softball teams have all earned the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence at least once. Women’s basketball and men’s soccer have both won the conference’s Team Academic Excellence Award the last three seasons. Women’s basketball is coming off a 2011 Sweet 16 appearance and finished No. 3 in the WBCA Team Academic Top 25. Men’s soccer qualified for its fifth straight BIG EAST Championship and also received the NSCAA team academic award. Golf and softball were both winners in 2009-10, while women’s tennis returns to the list after winning the same award in 2008-09.
In the last three academic years DePaul has had 16 programs earn the league’s Team Academic Excellence Award with a department-best seven teams in 2008-09.
The 2010-11 BIG EAST Team Academic Award winners were chosen based on the grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution’s roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport this past academic year.
