CHICAGO - DePaul head women's basketball coach Doug Bruno announced his team's 2011-12 non-conference schedule on Friday. The Blue Demons host a tournament and travel to Hawaii for the Jack-in-the-Box Rainbow Wahine Tournament in November and could play four NCAA Tournament teams during the non-conference portion of their schedule.
"In addition to playing in the toughest conference in the nation - the BIG EAST; DePaul has always played one of the toughest non-conference schedules and this year's degree of difficulty is no exception," Bruno said of his impending 2011-12 slate.
"We have always prided ourselves in playing tough local and state of Illinois programs. In addition, four other programs on our non-conference schedule played in the NCAA Tournament last year."
The Blue Demons open their 2011-12 campaign by hosting the Maggie Dixon Classic, Nov. 11-12.
DePaul, who has won its last 19 contests at McGrath-Phillips Arena, welcomes NCAA tournament teams Montana and Samford while the Blue Demons play St. Mary's in their opener. The consolation and championship games are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12.
"Our team always benefits from great travel experiences and this season we are taking our team to Hawaii," Bruno added of team's trip to Honolulu. Returning to the big island for the first time since 2005, the Blue Demons will square off with San Diego State, Portland and tournament-host Hawaii during the three-day tournament Nov. 18-20.
Upon returning to Chicago, DePaul travels the short distance to Northwestern (Nov. 27) and hosts Loyola on Dec. 3. The Blue Demons close out the early portion of December by hosting SIU-Edwardsville on its annual Field Trip Day on Dec. 9.
DePaul hits the road and heads to Princeton for a Dec. 13 contest.
"This road trip gives our players from the Philadelphia area the opportunity to play close to home," said Bruno of Princeton which is located 45 minutes outside of Philadelphia. The Tigers have also represented the Ivy League in the last two NCAA Tournaments.
Following DePaul's trip out East, the Blue Demons return to Illinois for four contests before the New Year. DePaul hosts the Pac-12's Arizona State on Dec. 16 before traveling to Illinois State for a contest on Dec. 19.
The Blue Demons close out 2011 by hosting Southern Illinois on Dec. 22 and Northern Illinois on Dec. 31.
DePaul is coming off its ninth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and the program's second Sweet 16 in 2011. The Blue Demons return unanimous first-team All-BIG EAST selection in senior Keisha Hampton while juniors Anna Martin and Katherine Harry are both two-year starters.
