USA Today Preseason Top 25

CHICAGO – DePaul women’s basketball received some good news on Thursday when the USA Today Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll was released with the Blue Demons opening the season ranked No. 20 in the country.

Coach Doug Bruno’s program was among two BIG EAST Conference teams voted by a coaches panel onto the Top 25 with Marquette debuting at No. 19.

Perennially challenging themselves with one of the nation’s toughest nonconference schedules, the Blue Demons will face four Top 25 teams in No. 1 Connecticut, No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 21 Oklahoma while encountering Marquette twice in the conference season.

In addition, after opening the Nov. 23-25 Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas against Florida Gulf Coast which is receiving votes in the national poll, DePaul could face No. 8 Ohio State and No. 9 Stanford in the tournament.

“We’re always thrilled to be ranked in the Top 25,” Bruno said. “At the same time, we know that we’re playing for the reviews and not the previews.

“This ranking is a prognostication based on speculation and not results. Our goal is to be ranked throughout the season as we tackle one of the most difficult nonconference schedules in the country and live up to our ranking on a game-by-game basis.”

The preseason ranking speaks to DePaul’s winning tradition and the respect coaches nationwide have for Bruno’s program which is coming off a 27-8 season and its 15th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. Only UConn, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee and Oklahoma can also make that claim.

The USA Today coaches panel believes the Blue Demons will undergo a seamless reload despite graduating their three leading scorers in Jessica January, Brooke Schulte and Jacqui Grant.

DePaul’s first test in a 5:30 p.m. exhibition game Nov. 5 against St. Xavier at Wintrust Arena.
