AP Preseason Poll

CHICAGO – DePaul women’s basketball will begin the 2017-18 season ranked among the top teams in the country.

The Associated Press women’s basketball preseason poll was released on Thursday and the Blue Demons were ranked No. 25.

Last week, the USA Today Coaches Poll had DePaul at No. 20 in its preseason rankings.

The rankings speak to DePaul’s winning tradition and the high regard coaches and media nationwide have for coach Doug Bruno’s program which is coming off a 27-8 season and its 15th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. Only Connecticut, Notre Dame, Stanford, Tennessee and Oklahoma can also make that claim.

“We’re always thrilled to be ranked in the Top 25 as it reflects the kind of respect our basketball program has earned,” Bruno said. “At the same time, we know that we’re playing for the reviews and not the previews.

“This ranking is a prognostication based on speculation and not results. Our goal is to be ranked throughout the season as we tackle one of the most difficult nonconference schedules in the country and live up to our ranking on a game-by-game basis.

“That is the kind of challenge we embrace at DePaul.”

Bruno’s team will face four AP Top 25 teams in No. 1 Connecticut, No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 22 Oklahoma while encountering No. 17 Marquette twice in the conference season.

In addition, after opening the Nov. 23-25 Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas against Florida Gulf Coast which is receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll, DePaul could face AP No. 5 Ohio State and No. 10 Stanford in the tournament.

The Blue Demons take on Saint Xavier in an exhibition game at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Wintrust Arena.
