CHICAGO – With two preseason games in the books, the No. 25 DePaul women’s basketball team opens its 2012-13 season by hosting the Maggie Dixon Classic, Nov. 9-10. The Blue Demons welcome Dayton, Mississippi Valley State and Nicholls State for the two-day tournament at McGrath-Phillips Arena. DePaul tips its season at 5:30 p.m. against Nicholls State on Friday, in the second game of a basketball tripleheader. Dayton and Mississippi Valley State clash at 3 p.m., while the evening concludes with DePaul’s men’s team opening its season against UC Riverside at 8 p.m.
All of DePaul’s games during the Maggie Dixon Classic will be streamed live on DePaul’s BlueTube with Cami Padilla calling the action courtside. Gametracker is available for all three games while in-game scoring and notes can be followed at www.twitter.com/DePaulWBBSID.
Friday’s tripleheader features a pregame tailgate for DePaul students, faculty, staff and fans under the “L” beginning at 4:30 p.m. Tickets to the pregame party are $10 which includes food and soda along with a “Chalk Talk” with head coach Doug Bruno prior to Friday’s tip. Tickets for the tailgate can be purchased at the party’s entrance, while DePaul students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
Formerly known as the DePaul Invitational, the Maggie Dixon Classic was renamed in 2009 and honors former Blue Demon assistant coach Maggie Dixon, who died on April 6, 2006 of an arrhythmia. Dixon’s tragic death came three weeks after concluding her first season as the head coach at Army which saw the Black Knights win the Patriot League Championship and make the program’s first trip to the NCAA Championship.
The Classic is the third tournament to be named after the former Blue Demon assistant and Army head coach. Jamie Dixon, the head men’s basketball coach at Pittsburgh and Dixon’s older brother hosts a tournament at Madison Square Garden while San Diego, Dixon’s alma mater, also hosts a tournament in the late coach’s name.
DePaul enters the season ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press Poll and is receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Blue Demons are coming off the program’s tenth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance while it returns six of its “Magnificent Seven” from a season ago.
Led by its veterans -- Anna Martin, Katherine Harry and Jasmine Penny -- the Blue Demons return 84% of their scoring including the BIG EAST’s leading scorer in Martin, who averaged 19.1 points per game. DePaul also returns 87% of its rebounding along with the BIG EAST’s leading rebounder in Harry, who grabbed 9.5 boards per game and broke a McGrath-Phillips Arena record with 20 rebounds against Louisville on Jan. 31, 2012.
Nicholls State returns four starters from a team that went 15-16 a year ago. The Colonels are paced by preseason all-Southland Conference selections -- Alisha Allan and KK Babin – who are the team’s top two returning scorers.
Friday’s meeting marks the first ever series meeting between the two programs while DePaul is 2-0 all-time against schools from the Southland Conference.
DePaul is 29-9 all-time in its season opener and has won its last five.
Tickets for Friday’s tripleheader or any DePaul Athletics event can be purchased from the DePaul Athletics ticket office (773-325-SLAM) or at any Ticketmaster location.
