Blue Demons Top Houston Jaguars, 75-59
In their final exhibition game before the season opener on November 18, the DePaul women's basketball team defeated the Houston Jaguars, 75-59. After trailing 29-28 at halftime, the Blue Demons outscored the Jaguars, 48-31, in the second half and cruised to the win. Junior Lenae Williams led DePaul with 25 points including five three-pointers while Latasha White added 11 points and five rebounds.
The first half was back-and-forth with the lead changing hands nine times and the largest lead being four points by either team. The game opened with three straight three-point buckets including the opening shot by Williams and a three by Candis Blankson to give the Blue Demons the early 6-3 lead. From there, Jaguars ran off seven straight points to take a 10-6 lead.
The Jaguars held the small lead throughout the first half until DePaul went up by four at 27-23 on a lay up by Jamie Smith with 1:30 remaining. The lead didn't last as the Jaguars made two free throws and a three-pointer to take the 28-27 halftime lead.
The Blue Demons came out quickly as they opened the second frame with a 16-5 run to make the score 43-33 with 12:14 remaining. The run was highlighted by four DePaul three-pointers, including three by Williams.
Houston made a run and cut the lead to 47-41 two minutes later, but it was as close as they would get as DePaul built a 17-point lead with under four minutes left in the game.
The Blue Demons open the season at second-ranked Tennessee on November 18. The time for the game will be determined next weekend. The home opener for DePaul will be Thanksgiving weekend when they host the Moran Realty Classic at the DePaul Athletic Center.
