Women's Hoops Wins Exhibition Opener
CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s basketball team won the first of their two exhibition games over the Chicago Challengers, 74-59, on Saturday evening at the DePaul Athletic Center. Jenni Dant led four players in double-figures with 22 points.
The Blue Demons opened the game with an 18-6 run over the first six minutes, sparked by a pair of three-pointers and a three-point play by Lindsay Forsberg. The Challengers cut the lead to 18-11 on a lay-in by former Blue Demon Carla Stone before DePaul answered with seven points to take a 25-11 lead midway through the opening half.
Over the next eight minutes, the Challengers closed the gap and came as close as six points, at 30-24, with two minutes remaining on the clock. Sarah Kustok nailed a pair of three’s to close the half and DePaul led, 37-26. For the game, the Blue Demons were 11-of-28 (.393) from behing the arc.
The second stanza opened with a Forsberg lay-up to give the Blue Demons a 42-28 advantage with 18:24 to go in the game. The Challengers closed the DePaul lead to eights points twice in the second half, but could get no closer as the Blue Demons built a 73-52 lead with just under four minutes left in the game.
Despite shooting just .333 from the field, the Blue Demons were able to take advantage of 31 turnovers by the Challengers. In addition to Dant’s game-high 22 points, Forsberg and Laura Sobieszczyk added 12 points and Kustok chipped in 10. Jamie Smith led the Blue Demons with nine rebounds while scoring six points.
Former Blue Demons Mfon Udoka collected 21 points and a game-high 23 rebounds to lead the Challengers.
DePaul’s second and final exhibition game will be Wednesday, Nov. 13, against the Dominican Republic National Team. Tipoff at the DePaul Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m. The opening game of the season is Nov. 23 when the Blue Demons travel to Southern Illinois.
