Blue Demons Win Moran Realty Classic Opener
CHICAGO - The DePaul women's basketball team opened the game with a 15-0 run and never looked back as they defeated Eastern Washington, 82-57, in the first round of the Moran Realty Classic. With the win, the Blue Demons move on to face Arkansas State in the championship game tomorrow night. Eastern Washington and Western Michigan will play in the consolation.
In the game-opening run, Lenae Williams poured in eight points and finished the game with a team-high 19. Others in double figures for the Blue Demons were Yolanda Lewis with 16, Sarah Kustok with 13 and Lindsay Forsberg with 12 points. Claudette Towers led the club with eight rebounds to go with five points and a pair of steals.
After taking a 43-30 lead at halftime, DePaul outscored Eastern Washington 39-27 in the second stanza. The Blue Demons built the lead up to 31 points at 80-49 on a three-pointer by Forsberg with just over three minutes left in the game.
In the tourney's first game, Arkansas State defeated Western Michigan, 72-62. Jolie McKeirnan led the Lady Indians with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Rae-Anne Smith added 14 and Chiquita Tucker scored 10 points. Western Michigan's Kristin Koetsier led the Broncos with 16 points and eight boards.
Saturday's action will feature Eastern Washington and Western Michigan in the consolation game at 6 p.m. followed by DePaul and Arkansas State in the championship game at 8 p.m.
