DePaul Rolls To 94-62 Victory

CHICAGO – Women’s basketball coach Doug Bruno secured his 300th win to open the 2003-04 season with a 94-62 win over UW-Milwaukee in the Moran Realty Classic on Friday night.  Ashley Luke led five players in double-figures with 18 points while Charlene Smith chipped in 15.  DePaul plays Northwestern State in the championship game of the Moran Realty Classic on Saturday night.

Following an Ashley Luke three-pointer to start the game, the Panthers went on a 13-2 run and built an eight-point lead with 15 minutes left in the game.  UW-Milwaukee held on to the lead only to see the Blue Demons chip away and go ahead on a lay-up by Jenna Rubino with just under eight minutes left in the first half.

Both teams traded baskets over the next four minutes before DePaul (1-0) put together a small five-point run and led 37-37 on a lay-up by Claudette Towers with 3:42 remaining.  Jenni Dant increased the lead to 13 points before UW-Milwaukee’s Anne Witte’s scored the final basket of the half for a 45-34 Blue Demon advantage.

DePaul put the game away early in the second half with a 14-2 run that built a 59-36.  Kimberly Becker cut the deficit to below 20 only to see Luke nailed back-to-back three’s from the top of the key to up the lead to 65-42.  From the 12-minute mark, the lead would never get smaller as DePaul’s advantage grew to as high as 32 points.

Bruno was able to play his entire bench as 10 players scored and 12 players finished with at least one rebound.  Luke led all scorers with 18 on five three-pointers to go with five steals.  Charlene Smith added 15 points, six rebounds and five steals while cousin, Khara finished with a double-double of 14 points and 11 boards.  Dant added 14 points and six steals while Rubino scored 11 points with five rebounds in her collegiate debut.  As a team, the Blue Demons tallied 25 steals.

UW-Milwaukee (0-1) was led by Kimberly Becker with 14 points and 10 rebounds.  The Panthers will play the Ball State Cardinals in the consolation game at 6 p.m. on Saturday.  Northwestern State knocked off the Cardinals, 82-80, in the first game of the tournament.  The Lady Demons didn’t hold the lead until a free throw by La-Terrica Dobin with just 45 seconds left in the game.  Northwestern State won the 1999 Moran Realty Classic at Alumni Hall.
