Game Notes: Florida Gulf Coast
St. Thomas, USVI – The DePaul women’s basketball team returns to the court on Thanksgiving for the first game of the Paradise Jam which is played at the University of the Virgin Islands’ UVI Sport and Fitness Center. The Blue Demons and Florida Gulf Coast tip at 4:30 p.m. (AST) while a live video stream is available on the Paradise Jam Website. The Blue Demons (3-1) enter the tournament on a two-game winning streak -- taking games from Howard (68-51) and Yale (95-80) – while DePaul is in a stretch of five games in eight days. DePaul will play three games, in three days in the Virgin Islands.
First up for the Blue Demons is Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday. The Eagles (2-1) are coming off a 79-60 loss at Charlotte on Nov. 17. FGCU is led in scoring by Sarah Hansen’s 18.7 points while she also leads the team in rebounding (8.3) and free throw percentage (.813). The Eagles rely heavily on the 3-pointer and average 7.0 triples per game. Lerrin Cook leads FGCU with 10 triples and is shooting .417 from behind the arc.
DePaul has used a balanced attack in its first four games and has five players averaging more than eight points per game. Led by Jasmine Penny’s 16.3 points; Brittany Hrynko (15.5), Anna Martin (15.3) and Katherine Harry (14.0) are also averaging double-figures.
With an emphasis on finding the open player—DePaul is recording 22.5 assists per game and dished out a season-best 24 against Dayton. The Blue Demons register an assist on nearly 70 percent (69.23%) of their baskets while the guard trio of Martin, Chanise Jenkins and Hrynko have accounted for 72 of the team’s 90 assists.
Thursday’s game with the Eagles is the first ever meeting between the two programs, while DePaul is 0-1 all-time against schools from the Atlantic Sun.
Following tomorrow’s game, the Blue Demons will take on Hampton on Friday and close out the tournament on Saturday against South Carolina. Every game from the Paradise Jam is streamed live for the tournament’s homepage.
