CHICAGO – There will be 4,000 enthusiastic, screaming school children at Wintrust Arena Monday cheering on the Blue Demons in their Wintrust Field Trip Day game against North Side rival Loyola.

DePaul players and coaches have talked about how the high energy in the arena fires them up for this annual event.

“Field Trip Day is a great event because of all the young Chicago school children getting their first exposure to a college women’s basketball game,” said Blue Demon coach Doug Bruno. “Ed Wehmer (Wintrust Bank CEO) and Wintrust do so much for the children of Chicago such as sponsoring Field Trip Day, Wintrust Blankets Chicago and Wintrust Reads.

“Wintrust truly invests in the youth of Chicago in so many ways, and Field Trip Day is just another wonderful example.

“I always want to thank athletics director Jean Lenti Ponsetto and the DePaul Athletics administration for creating and supporting Wintrust Field Trip Day. Colleges all over America sponsor these types of events, but nobody sponsors it like DePaul and Wintrust.”

Wintrust is partnering with DePaul Athletics in helping transport the 4,000 elementary school students to Wintrust Arena for the 11 a.m. game. The children will receive free tickets and free Blue Demon T-shirts as they raise the decibel level of DePaul’s new home in the South Loop.

More than 30 schools will be represented with L.Ward STEM Elementary School bringing 500 students while John Whistler Elementary is bringing 275 and James Madison Elementary 250 students.

DePaul and Wintrust are sponsoring 60 of the nearly 100 buses that will be transporting the school children to the game. Since 2008, a total of 32,814 school children have attended Field Trip Day games which also includes volleyball, soccer, softball, the BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament and the BIG EAST Women’s Softball Tournament.

This partnership also features Wintrust Blankets Chicago which teams up Wintrust and the DePaul student-athletes who make blankets to distribute to Chicago-area community-service organizations such as the St. Vincent de Paul Center for children, Marillac House and women’s shelters.

Wintrust Reads is the union of DePaul, Wintrust Bank, Chicago Public Schools, Archdiocesan and charter elementary schools offering incentives to assist teachers working to improve their students’ critical reading skills.

DePaul (5-2) is coming off a successful run at the Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas where Bruno’s team went 2-1 with victories over Memphis and Gonzaga. In the 88-71 win over Gonzaga, Kelly Campbell came close to a triple-double with 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Ashton Millender leads six Blue Demons averaging in double figures at 16.4 points a game. The junior guard is followed by Mart'e Grays (15.0), Amarah Coleman and Tanita Allen (13.3), Campbell (11.3) and Chante Stonewall (11.1). DePaul is averaging 92.6 points a game. DePaul is receiving votes in the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.

Loyola opened the season losing its first five games before defeating Chicago State 46-28 on Friday night.  The Ramblers held the home team to 17 percent shooting and were led by Jessica Cerda’s game-high 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting including 5-of-8 from three-point range.
