Blue Demons Host Loyola on Saturday

CHICAGO - The women’s basketball team looks for its seventh straight win to open the 2007-08 season on Saturday night against Loyola-Chicago. DePaul, ranked No. 15 in this week’s AP poll and 16th in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches top 25, tangles with the Ramblers at McGrath Arena at 7 p.m. Loyola stands at 1-7 in the early portion of the season while DePaul enters the game at 6-0. The Blue Demons are one of two undefeated BIG EAST teams as Connecticut stands at 7-0.

Following the Loyola game, the Blue Demons host Chicago State on Dec. 12 at McGrath Arena. The Wednesday contest is set for a Noon start as DePaul welcomes elementary school students from the Chicagoland area for “Field Trip Day.” The Chicago State game finishes a four-game homestand for DePaul. The Blue Demons are also in the midst of a seven-game stretch where they play six opponents from the state of Illinois.

Doug Bruno Wins 400: With DePaul’s 80-48 win over Missouri State on Dec. 2, head coach Doug Bruno became the 40th active coach to reach the 400-win plateau. Bruno has totaled a 400-230 record in his 22 seasons with the Blue Demons. In addition to the 400 victories, he has led the program to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances and 11 seasons with at least 20 victories. The Blue Demons own a .745 (123-42) winning percentage in the last five-plus seasons and are looking for their sixth straight NCAA appearance.

He is the third coach this season to eclipse the 400-win mark following Patricia Cage-Bibbs at North Carolina A&T on Nov. 23 and Texas’ Gail Goestenkors on Nov. 25.

Noting the Blue Demons: The Blue Demons have held their last two opponents to less than 50 points for the first time since Jan. 1999... DePaul posted a 53-47 win against Cincinnati on Jan. 3 and a 78-49 win against Loyola-Chicago on Jan. 5, 1999... the last time three straight opponents have been held to less than 50 was in Feb. 1992... DePaul actually posted four straight sub-50 defensive performances against Saint Louis (Feb. 6, 74-40), Memphis State (Feb. 8, 66-46), Notre Dame (Feb. 11, 62-49) and Cincinnati (Feb. 15, 75-42)... with a school-record 250 three-pointers in 2006-07, DePaul has made at least 200 three’s in a season in eight straight years... the 2002-03 squad held the previous program record with 233 three’s in a season... since the start of the 2003-04 season (133 games), the Blue Demons have held 64.7 percent of their opponents to less than 70 points (86-of-133)... in that span, DePaul is 77-9 (.895) when holding opponents to less than 70 points... in 2006-07, the Blue Demons were 6-10 when allowing more than 70 points and 13-3 when holding the opposition to less than 70... in the last three-plus seasons, the Blue Demons are 78-25 (.757)... in the last 37 home games against conference opponents, DePaul has posted 34 victories (.919 winning pct.)... DePaul hasn’t scored 100 points since a 103-64 win over Charlotte on Jan. 16, 2005 (88 games)... over the last seven-plus seasons (226 games), DePaul has scored at least 80 points in 80 games... the Blue Demons hold a 76-4 (.950) record in those games... Pittsburgh handed DePaul its only loss in 2006-07 when scoring at least 80... the Panthers topped the Blue Demons, 87-80, on Feb. 24 at the Petersen Events Center... in 34 seasons of play at DePaul, the women’s basketball program is 595-352 (.628)... with two games in each of its two BIG EAST Tournaments, DePaul is just one of four teams to play in multiple conference tourney games... Connecticut, Rutgers and Pittsburgh have also played at least two games in each of the last two BIG EAST Championships.

Opponent 7 - Loyola-Chicago Ramblers: Loyola enters Saturday’s game looking to snap a seven-game losing streak... following a season-opening win over Robert Morris, the Ramblers have dropped the last seven... Loyola lost, 80-56, to Bradley on Wednesday... the Ramblers return eight players and three starters from last season’s 7-21 team... Loyola was picked to finish 10th in the preseason Horizon League poll... Maggie McCloskey leads the team with an 11.9 scoring average while Elyse VanBogaert adds 11.5 points per game... head coach Shannon Reidy is in her third season at Loyola... she holds a record of 12-53 with the Ramblers.

The Series - DePaul leads 30-9: Saturday marks 40th all-time meeting between the two programs... the Blue Demons have won the last 13 meetings and 17 of the last 18 games... a year ago in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico at the San Juan Shootout, DePaul posted a 97-70 victory... Caprice Smith led five players in double-figures with 19 points as the Blue Demons took a 45-26 lead at halftime... Saturday’s game is the second of two games this season against Horizon League opponents... DePaul knocked off Illinois-Chicago, 74-35, on Nov. 29... the program has won 43 straight games against the current roster of Horizon League programs... the last loss to a Horizon League team was at UW-Green Bay on Jan. 9, 1996, by a 68-64 score... overall, DePaul is 117-30 (.796) against Horizon League opponents.

It Could Happen: A win would mark the fourth 7-0 start in school history... the Blue Demons have started the season at 7-0 in two of the last four campaigns... a win would also extend current winning streaks of: 24 straight home wins against non-conference opponents, 26 consecutive wins over Illinois opponents and 43 straight wins over Horizon League teams... the game will be No. 104 for Allie Quigley and Caprice Smith tying them for 30th all-time with assistant coach Candis Blankson... Blankson played in 104 career games at DePaul from 1997-01... Quigley needs seven points to pass Mfon Udoka (1994-98 - 1,569) for 10th all-time... Quigley also needs three three-pointers to become the second player in school history with 200 three’s... with eight assists, she passes Tammy Williams (1991-93 - 337) for sixth all-time... Smith needs two points to pass Anne McDonald (1995-99 - 1,022) for 19th all-time... she also needs 14 rebounds for 600 career boards.

Against the State: DePaul has seen recent success against opponents from the state of Illinois.  Over the last 41 games against Chicago State, Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago, Northern Illinois, Northwestern and Southern Illinois, the Blue Demons have posted 40 victories. The Blue Demons defeated Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Illinois-Chicago, Loyola-Chicago and Chicago State last season.

DePaul has won 47 of the last 49 games against state opponents and currently holds a 26-game winning streak against Illinois schools. The last loss to a state program was on Dec. 4, 2002, as Illinois defeated the Blue Demons in Champaign by a 71-67 score. During the 49-game stretch, both defeats have occurred at Illinois with the last home loss to an Illinois program on Nov. 20, 1998, against Northwestern. The Wildcats defeated the Blue Demons at Alumni Hall by a score of 62-61.

Demon Doings: Notes following the 80-48 win against Missouri State on Dec. 2:
Doug Bruno became the 40th active NCAA coach with 400 victories... he is the third coach this season to hit the 400-win mark.
- The win was No. 595 in program history.
- The Blue Demons have won 88 of 99 (.889 win pct.) all-time games at McGrath Arena.
- The 6-0 start is the sixth in school history and the fourth in the last five seasons.
- Missouri State marked the 24th straight win at home against non-conference opponents.
- DePaul held back-to-back opponents to less than 50 points for the first time since a 53-47 win against Cincinnati on Jan. 3 and a 78-49 win against Loyola-Chicago on Jan. 5, 1999.
- DePaul has won all three meetings between the two programs.

Streaking: Dating back to last season and in some cases, the last couple of seasons, the Blue Demons have put together various streaks. Listed below are some current active streaks heading into Saturday’s game against Loyola-Chicago:
- 80 consecutive games with a three-pointer
- 26 straight wins against opponents from Illinois, 39 of the last 40, and 46 wins in the last 48 games
- five straight NCAA Championship appearances
- 94 consecutive starts for Allie Quigley
- 24 wins in-a-row at home against non-conference opponents

TV Time: The BIG EAST Conference totals a league-record 101 combined appearances this season featuring each of the league’s 16 programs. For the second straight year every game of the league tournament will be televised and the CSTV “Game of the Week” package will single out the BIG EAST as the nation’s only conference with a weekly women’s basketball night on CSTV. DePaul is scheduled to make at least eight regular-season television appearances starting on Jan. 2 against defending NCAA Champion Tennessee on ESPNU. The Blue Demons will also be seen on ESPNU in games against Pittsburgh on Jan. 6 and Notre Dame on Feb. 24. The BIG EAST TV Network will carry the Jan. 19 game at Marquette while the Jan. 22 game at Notre Dame will be on CSTV. Louisville visits McGrath Arena on Feb. 10 for an ESPN2-televised game. While the final home game of the regular season against Connecticut will be seen on CLTV in Chicago with the CPTV (Connecticut Public Television) feed. Recently, West Virginia Public Broadcasting announced a nine-game television package with the DePaul-West Virginia game in Morgantown on Feb. 16 on WV PBS.
