Khara Smith Named Conference USA Player of the Week

CHICAGO – DePaul junior Khara Smith was named the Conference USA Player of the Week, announced by the league on Monday.  The C-USA Preseason Player of the Year earned the honor after posting her sixth double-double of the season at Saint Peter's last Tuesday.

Smith totaled a season-high 32 points to go with 13 rebounds and five blocked shots against the Peahens.  During a decisive 25-2 run for the Blue Demons, Smith keyed the effort with 10 points during that stretch.  She also had two steals and played 37 minutes without a personal foul.  It is the first time this season and the seventh career occasion that Smith had earned C-USA's weekly honor.

The forward leads the Blue Demons, ranked No. 18 in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches' poll and No. 19 in the Associated Press top 25, with 20.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.  In the last two games alone, Smith is averaging 29.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots per game.

DePaul travels to Hanover, N.H., this week for the Blue Sky Restaurant Classic.  The two-day tournament, hosted by Dartmouth, features the Blue Demons taking on Valparaiso on Wednesday followed by Dartmouth and Richmond.  The consolation and championship games will be played on Thursday.  The Blue Demons return to the DePaul Athletic Center on Sunday, Jan. 2, when they host Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
