Blue Demons Ready for an Encore Performance

CHICAGO – DePaul heads into its BIG EAST showdown with St. John's on Saturday looking for an encore performance to its conference opener on Thursday night.
That's when the Blue Demons lit up McGrath-Phillips Arena with an eye-popping performance tying a program record with 19 three-pointers in a thoroughly entertaining 89-66 victory.
In its last 12 games, DePaul has made 167 baskets from distance for an average of nearly 14 per game.
Leading the way was sophomore Kelly Campbell who recorded the fourth triple-double in the 43-year history of DePaul women's basketball with 11 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists.
Ashton Millender was the recipient of multiple Campbell assists and connected on seven shots from three-point range that tied a career high.
A testament to what is described as "DePaulBall," the Blue Demons had 29 assists on 31 baskets.
Campbell has been a rebounding machine of late, coming away with 28 boards in her last two games.
She also has a streak of 20 consecutive free throws with her last miss coming back on Nov. 23 at the Play4Kay Showcase in Las Vegas.
In the latest NCAA ratings, the Blue Demons are the nation’s No. 1 team in three-pointers per game and No. 2 in assists, three-point baskets and attempts.
They are No. 5 in assist-turnover ratio and assists per game, No. 6 in scoring offense, No. 10 in turnover margin and No. 17 in steals.
Campbell is No. 5 in the country in assist-turnover ratio, No. 14 in assists and No. 19 in free throw percentage. Millender is No. 13 in three-point baskets and No. 20 in three-pointers per game.
DePaul (9-4, 1-0) leads the BIG EAST in seven categories including scoring offense, assists, three-pointers and assist-turnover ratio. Campbell is tops in assist-turnover ratio and fellow sophomore Chante Stonewall leads the league in three-point percentage.
The Blue Demons have forced 278 turnovers this season for an average of 21.4 per game.
St. John’s (7-5, 0-1) took BIG EAST preseason favorite Marquette into overtime Thursday night before succumbing 74-72 in Milwaukee. Alisha Kebbe led the Red Storm with 16 points and four steals.
On the season, Andrayah Adams and Akina Wellere top the scoring at 12.7 points per game. Forward Maya Singleton is averaging a double-double with 11.8 points and 11.4 rebounds. The 6-foot senior who had 24 rebounds against Kansas also leads the team in steals and blocked shots.
The Red Storm has a balanced attack similar to DePaul’s with five players averaging in double figures.
