CHICAGO – DePaul senior forward Jasmine Penny was named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week it was announced on Monday. Penny’s first career Player of the Week honor comes after tying a career-high with 29 points at Bradley last week.
Penny’s 29 points came on 13-of-14 shooting, while the Logansport, Ind., native was also a perfect 3-of-3 from the free throw line in DePaul’s 91-67 victory over Bradley on Dec. 29. The senior also added five rebounds and tied a season-high with three steals.
The forward’s 29 points also pushed her over the 1,000-career point mark. She has 1,026 points– fourth-most among active BIG EAST players -- entering the Blue Demons’ BIG EAST showdown with Xavier at 4 p.m. on New Year’s Day at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Penny has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times this season, but this is her first career Player of the Week accolade.
For the season, Penny is averaging 14.8 points and is shooting .605 from the field, both lead the Blue Demons.
Seton Hall’s Sidney Cook earned the league’s Freshman of the Week. Cook registered a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds in her first BIG EAST game against St. John’s.
Briana Brown (St. John’s), Natalie Butler (Georgetown), McKenzie Fujan (Creighton), Shatyra Hawkes (Xavier) and Tori Rule (Providence) were all named to the conference’s Weekly Honor Roll.
