DePaul Draws with Northwestern in Preseason Matchup
Aug. 11, 2012
EVANSTON, Ill. – In the DePaul women’s soccer team’s first and only exhibition of the 2012 preseason, the Blue Demons walked away with a 1-1 tie with cross-town foe Northwestern Saturday evening in Evanston.
The only freshman on the pitch to open the contest, Brianna Ryce made the most of her chance. In the 19th minute, Ryce took a cross from Rebekah Roller and—with the Northwestern goalkeeper out of position—the Trinidad and Tobago native headed the ball into the back of the net to give the Blue Demons a 1-0 advantage.
In the first half, DePaul outshot the Wildcats 5-2 and led Northwestern in shots on goal 3-0. Also active on the attack for the Blue Demons was junior Natasa Radosavljevic who added three shots—two on goal—in the contest.
While it looked as though the Blue Demons were on their way to a preseason victory, Northwestern managed to knot it up in the waning moments of the contest. In the 90th minute, the Wildcats’ Jennifer Korn scored the equalizer on a free kick inside the 18-yard box after freshman keeper Alejandria Godinez was called for stalling.
Sophomore Megan Pyrz opened the contest in the net for DePaul and faced no shots in the first half. Godinez opened the second half and finished one for two in saves.
Overall in the match, DePaul outshot Northwestern 7-5 and 4-2 in shots on goal.
The exhibition with the Wildcats is the Blue Demons’ only preseason contest before opening the regular season on Friday, August 17. DePaul welcomes Towson that day for a 4 p.m. matchup at Wish Field inside Cacciatore Stadium. It is the first of four straight home contests to open the season for the Blue Demon squad as they also take to the field on Sunday, August 19 at 1 p.m.
