EVANSTON, Ill. – In its regular season debut on Friday evening, the DePaul women’s soccer team was edged by #23 Northwestern 1-0 in its crosstown showdown with the Wildcats.

The Blue Demons held Northwestern scoreless until the final minute of the first half where Wildcat defender Kayla Sharples landed a one-timer into the back of the net.  The shot was set up with a corner kick from midfielder Marisa Viggiano.  Her touch was shot point blank by NU’s Grace Orndorff where the save by DePaul’s senior goalkeeper Lauren Frasca was deflected to the feet of Sharples and touched into the net.

Northwestern, which outshot the Blue Demons 11-3 in the contest, had five shots in the first half.

Of note, Frasca made five saves in the contest off of Northwestern’s 11 attempts.

DePaul had two chances to tie the match in the 68th minute.  Senior midfielder Alexa Ben cruised to the box with a breakaway from midfield weaving through four Wildcat defenders.  Her shot hit the crossbar and was settled by Abigail Callahan.  Facing a net with just two NU defenders and no goalkeeper, Callahan’s attempt was blocked by NU’s Hannah Davison at the goal line to keep the Wildcats ahead 1-0.

Down the stretch, the Wildcats secured the victory in the final minutes of the match with long balls to the far corner of the field, evading any further offensive attack from the Blue Demons.

“Northwestern was a great team tonight, and it’s obvious why they are ranked No. 23 in the country,” said head coach Erin Chastain.  “Tonight was a great opening test for us.  Our second half of play was a lot more organized and better set, and we had a few chances to tie the match.  We generated a lot of attacking runs, and I believe today gave us great insight for Sunday’s match against Illinois.”

With the win, Northwestern leads the all-time series with DePaul 8-1.

The Blue Demons return to action on Sunday when they travel to Champaign, Ill., to face the Fighting Illinois of Illinois at 1:00 p.m.  Sunday is the first-ever meeting between DePaul and Illinois.

DePaul remains on the road for its next three matches until the Blue Demons return to Wish Field for their home opener on Sept. 8 against Pepperdine (Calif.) at 3:00 p.m.
