Paul's Only Option: Lead DePaul to Victory
Aug. 24, 2012
CHICAGO - After a subpar performance last weekend, Amber Paul knew exactly where she stood.
"It was either step up and play hard for 90 minutes or watch from the bench," Paul said.
Option No. 1 resulted in a goal and an assist in DePaul's 3-0 victory over Ohio Friday at Wish Field.
In the 21st minute, Paul spotted Natasa Radosavljevic cutting between two Bobcat center backs and slipped the ball through. Radosavljevic responded with her second goal of the year off the underside of the crossbar.
DePaul (2-1-0) came up with a smooth combination in the 29th minute of Erin Pekovitch-to-Kelly Blumberg-to-Paul.
"It was a nice cross from Kelly," Paul said. "I hit it with my right foot and knew it was in."
"I thought Amber was tremendous," said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. "I really challenged her after last weekend to step up her game."
Paul remembers that wake-up call.
"Coach had a talk with me during our individual film session," Paul said. "I was very frustrated last weekend, and I needed a push."
All the Blue Demons came out with more intensity and aggressiveness despite the 90-degree heat after a slow start led to a 1-0 loss to Loyola Chicago last Sunday.
"Rebekah (Roller), Kelly (Blumberg) and Ashleigh (Goddard) worked hard in the midfield winning 50-50 balls and getting them to the forwards," said Paul, who also shined in the midfield. "Coach made sure we came out with a lot more energy than last Sunday."
Chastain is hoping that lesson will carry over to DePaul's 4 p.m. game against Valparaiso this Sunday at Wish Field.
"The Friday-Sunday combination is tough," Chastain said. "Our group needs to do the right things physically and mentally between now and Sunday."
NOTES: DePaul outshot Ohio (0-3) 26-10 with 13 shots on goal to seven for the Bobcats... the Blue Demons also chalked up a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks... Chastain used seven position players off her bench along with back-up goalkeeper Alejandria Godinez who made her first collegiate appearance starting the second half... Radosavljevic led the Blue Demons with five shots and four shots on goal... Elise Wyatt had four shots with one on goal while Pekovitch had two shots and both were on frame... Paul took three shots with one on goal... Ohio goalkeeper Mattie Liston made 10 saves.
