Blue Demons Cruise Past Saint Louis, 4-0
Aug 25, 2013
ST. LOUIS - There were some offensive fireworks set off Sunday at Hermann Stadium, courtesy of the DePaul Blue Demons.
Led by Elise Wyatt's two goals, the Blue Demons cruised to a 4-0 victory over Saint Louis in a nonconference match. The win evened DePaul's record at 1-1-0.
Wyatt, who led the team in goals last year with five, tapped in a shot as the ball bounced around just outside the Billikens' net in the 29th minute. It was the sophomore forward's first score of the season.
"I saw MaryKate Cicinelli making her move down the wing, and I remembered Erin (DePaul coach Erin Chastain) telling us someone has to get clear and challenge the goalkeeper," Wyatt said. "I was fighting for position in front of the net and fell down.
"The Saint Louis defender was trying to clear the ball when it hit off my body and went into the net."
Her second goal came in the 66th minute during a run in the box in which she took a pass from Ana Greik and drilled it home from 12 yards out. That provided a 4-0 lead.
"I was starting to get tired at that point," Wyatt said. "I saw MaryKate getting ready to sub in for me and told myself I have one more good run left in me. I gave it one last sprint and Ana set me up by flipping it over the defender."
Early in the second half, Ashleigh Goddard scored off a deflection, beating Saint Louis goalkeeper Hanna Benben to the lower left. The goal in the 48th minute was her first of the year.
In the 55th minute, the Blue Demons were the beneficiaries of an own goal for a 3-0 lead.
"Elise deserves all the credit for that goal," Chastain said. "She beat her defender, made an aggressive offensive move and sent a hard cross that deflected off a Saint Louis player into the net.
"Our team watched a lot of film after we lost the season opener on Friday, and they had a wonderful response. After leading 1-0 in a pretty even first half, I told our players to get after it and get another goal. Our whole team learned from that first game and played much better."
Wyatt saw another benefit to the big win.
"It's exciting and a lot of fun when you score that many times," Wyatt said. "It also gives a lot of players an opportunity for playing time. Once we begin BIG EAST Conference play, all this playing experience will help."
DePaul goes on the road again Friday for a nonconference match at Ohio.
