DePaul Falls to Louisville in Sunday Showdown
Sept. 16, 2012
CHICAGO – DePaul ran into one of the BIG EAST Conference’s best on Sunday and came up on the short end.
Louisville, which is receiving votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Top 25 national rankings, walked off Wish Field with a 2-0 victory.
Louisville (6-2-0, 1-1-0 in the BIG EAST) scored quickly as Courtney Holtz fired in a shot from 25 yards out on the right wing into the upper left in the sixth minute. Charlyn Corral, the Cardinals’ top distributor, got the assist.
In the 31st minute, Corral took a pass from Erin Yenney and was alone on the right wing when she scored into the upper right.
“Louisville is a very good team that will finish among the top teams in the conference,” said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. “They have a player (Christine Exeter) who is the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and an NSCAA All-American.
“They scored a good first goal on a great finish, but the second was a really soft goal. That was something that just shouldn’t happen.
“We didn’t come out with a lot of intensity.”
After being outshot 9-2 in the first half, DePaul (5-4-1, 1-1-0) kept it more even in the second half. A telling statistic was shots on goal as the Cardinals had six to none for the home team.
“We played well on Friday night in beating Cincinnati 1-0 on the road, but again we came out a little slow,” Chastain said. “I was hoping our momentum from that game would carry over into today.
“We did a much better job today in the second half and showed our willingness to battle. But at that point against a team like Louisville, that might be too much to overcome.”
“Overall, the backline did a great job of dealing with Exeter,” Chastain said. “They were able to match her physicality.”
The Blue Demons return to action on Thursday with a 4 p.m. nonconference match against St.Louis at Wish Field.
