CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s soccer team earned its first point of conference play on Saturday as the Blue Demons earned a 1-1 draw with Seton Hall in their BIG EAST season opener.
DePaul freshman Morgan Turner scored her second goal of the season in the 25th minute of the match to give the Blue Demons the early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Demons (4-5-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) would hold that lead for 62 minutes until the Pirates scored the equalizer in the 87th minute to push the match into overtime.
DePaul began the match on the aggressive. In the 15th minute, the Blue Demons recorded their first chance of the afternoon from the boot of Alexa Ben. On a run up the middle, Ben found junior forward Franny Cerny making a run up the left sideline. Cerny collected the touch from Ben and lifted a cross through the box to Madeline Frick who narrowly missed a header that sailed just above the crossbar.
In the 30th minute, DePaul threatened to extend its lead with a second goal. Frick found Ben in the middle of the field for a one-versus-one opportunity for the senior. Ben’s shot was handled by Seton Hall’s goalkeeper point-blank where the rebound was gathered by Frick and tabbed just right of the post.
DePaul held a 7-2 lead in shots over Seton Hall at the intermission along with the 1-0 edge.
In the 63rd minute, Cerny spearheaded yet another goal-scoring opportunity for the Blue Demons. Bringing the ball up the field, Cerny whipped the ball across the goalkeeper’s face. Frick received the cross; however, her shot back post was stopped by the diving Seton Hall keeper’s outstretched gloves to keep the deficit at one goal.
With the Blue Demons closing in on the win, the Pirates (0-6-3, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) tied the match in the 87th minute. Andrea Palermo lifted a cross to Cassy Harrigan at the back post where the forward headed the touch into the net for her second goal of the season, forcing overtime.
Throughout the two overtime periods, both sides made runs at goal, but neither were successful at landing the game winner.
With ten seconds left in the match, the Blue Demons made a final stab at a victory but Cerny’s shot on goal was handled by the Seton Hall keeper as time expired to end the match in a 1-1 double-overtime draw.
DePaul finished the match with a 12-9 shot advantage where Cerny contributed a match-high five shots while Frick added four shots to the total.
Next, the Blue Demons will host No. 15 Georgetown on Sept. 28 at Wish Field. The match will be broadcasted live via the BIG EAST Digital Network beginning at 3 p.m.
