Late Goal Dooms DePaul on Friday Night
Sept. 28, 2012
STORRS, Conn. – A pair of first-half goals from senior captain Kelly Blumberg were not enough for the DePaul women’s soccer team on Friday night as it fell 3-2 to BIG EAST Conference foe Connecticut at Morrone Stadium.
In the first half, it was all Blumberg. In the 15th minute, the Blue Demon senior took a pass from junior Ren Stoecklin into the center of the box and slotted it past UConn’s Leigh-Ann Jaggon to give DePaul (7-5-1, 2-2 BIG EAST) the early 1-0 advantage.
Just over five minutes later, the Huskies (7-4-1, 3-2 BIG EAST) nabbed the equalizer. Connecticut’s Samantha McGuire connected for her fourth goal of the season in the 20th minute to make it 1-1.
In the 29th minute, the Blue Demons took back control. With the Huskies whistled for a foul, junior midfielder Rebekah Roller settled in to take the free kick for DePaul. The well-placed service found the head of Blumberg, who found the back of the net to push DePaul’s lead back to one heading into the half.
After the break, UConn came out firing. Stephanie Ribeiro took a rebound off the post in the 58th minute and shot it past Blue Demon goalkeeper Megan Pyrz to knot the match at 2-2.
In the waning minutes of regulation, Connecticut added the final blow. Linda Ruutu, who added an assist on the Huskies’ first goal, took a free kick from 30 yards out and blasted past Pyrz to give UConn the 3-2 victory.
Pyrz finished the match with eight saves while Jaggon finished with four.
The Blue Demons hope a quick turnaround will bring a different result on Sunday. DePaul heads to Providence for a noon matchup against the Friars on Sunday for its fifth BIG EAST match of the season.
