OMAHA, Neb. – The DePaul women’s soccer team earned its first BIG EAST victory of 2017 on Sunday as the Blue Demons downed Creighton on the road 2-0.
DePaul (5-6-1, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on Franny Cerny’s sixth goal of the season. Freshman Morgan Turner worked her way through the box, side-stepping a Creighton defender, to deliver a cross to the middle of the box to Cerny. With one swift movement, Cerny split the covering Creighton defenders and headed the ball into the net for the lead.
DePaul carried that 1-0 lead into the break, having outshot the Bluejays 8-1 in first half.
The Blue Demons narrowly missed taking a 2-0 advantage in the opening minute of the second half on a header by Turner. The attempt, which came off a corner by Cerny, was blocked by Creighton’s Mackenzie Graybill on the goal line to keep the match at 1-0 in DePaul’s favor.
Creighton’s lone catches for an equalizer came in the 69th minute when Kylin Grubb’s and Hannah Miller’s back-to-back attempts were stopped by the Blue Demon defensive back line.
In 83rd minute, Cerny netted an insurance goal to clinch DePaul’s 2-0 win. Madeline Frick pushed a cross into the box from right to left that was broken up by the Bluejay keeper. In the scrum for the ball, Cerny came out on top and tapped the deflected ball into the net for seventh goal of the season.
“I’m happy for the team as road wins in conference play are tough,” said head coach Erin Chastain. “I thought our back line played well and Franny showed incredible determination. Alexa [Ben] helped us maintain possession and created dangerous chances.”
Sunday’s win was the first road win of the season for the Blue Demons as DePaul collected its fifth shutout of the year.
DePaul will now return to Wish Field for another BIG EAST match against Marquette on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m.
