Pitman's Shot Good as Gold in 1-0 Overtime Win Over Seton Hall
Oct. 3, 2013
CHICAGO – Rachel Pitman was in the right place at the right time on Thursday, and the DePaul defender made sure to cash in on her golden opportunity.
Pitman’s golden goal from right in front of the net in the 93rd minute sent DePaul to a 1-0 overtime victory over Seton Hall for its first BIG EAST Conference win this season.
What a perfect time for Pitman’s first goal of the season.
“On corner kicks, I’m usually positioned far post and getting marked,” Pitman said. “This time I was right in front of the net and saw the ball drop in front of me.
“I was a couple yards away and said: ‘I’m going to smack it and finish this off.’ For any defender, this is such a big thing. We’re always working so hard to keep the ball out of the net---it's a nice change to put the ball into the net.”
Rebekah Roller’s service early in overtime sailed right to the front of the Pirates net. Ashleigh Goddard got a head on it and the shot was blocked, only to roll right to Pitman.
Early in the match, Goddard had a great chance to score from eight yards out with Seton Hall goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew out of position. Goddard took a controlled shot that hit the crossbar.
“I’m glad I was able to get that goal for Ash as well,” Pitman said. “I’ve known her since I was 13 years old and we were both growing up in England. She would have beaten herself up over not scoring that goal.”
Instead, DePaul improves to 7-2-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in the BIG EAST.
“It was a great goal,” said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. “The way Seton Hall (4-6-2, 2-1-0) defends corner kicks, I thought there was a good opportunity for us to score. Rachel did a great job being feisty in the box and got on the end of it.
“I thought our backs played really well. They don’t get the chance to make big plays like this. Our defense did a good job limiting the chances of No. 12 (Kaitlyn Ritter) and No. 2 (Ashley Clarke) in the run of play. They are Seton Hall’s most dangerous players.”
It doesn’t get any easier for DePaul as Villanova comes to Wish Field on Sunday for a 1 p.m. BIG EAST match.
Sunday is the annual Kicks Against Cancer game where DePaul is part of a nationwide fundraising initiative to help find a cure for breast cancer in addition to cancer awareness and prevention. The initiative also strives to help women living with cancer to survive and thrive.
The Blue Demons will be wearing pink jerseys, and all proceeds from the game will be donated to the American Cancer Society. There will be an autograph session after the match.
NOTES: This was Alex Godinez’s fourth shutout of the season… she came into the match ranked No. 16 in the nation and No. 2 in the BIG EAST in save percentage… the sophomore goalkeeper made five saves against Seton Hall… DePaul outshot Seton Hall 11-10, but the Pirates had a 5-3 edge in shots on goal… Roller led the Blue Demons with four shots and two on goal… Goddard and Elise Wyatt each took two shots and Pitman had one shot on goal.
