CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to its BIG EAST rival Marquette on Thursday evening in a physical match that witness 27 fouls in 90 minutes of play.

After the first 45 minutes of action, both sides sat at an offensive stalemate where both sides managed just four shots apiece in the opening period.

Marquette (9-4-1, 2-2 BIG EAST) broke the silence in the 61st minute when Carrie Madden tallied her first of two goals on the match to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead.  Four minutes later, Madden would secure Marquette’s victory on a header just inside the near post to bring the Golden Eagles lead and winning tally to 2-0.

While DePaul (5-7-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) had nine shots in the match, only five fell on frame.  The Blue Demons’ best attempt came in the 39th minute when freshman forward Morgan Turner hit a right-footed strike from just outside the six that Marquette’s Allison Jacobson deflected with her left shoulder just before the ball crossed the goal line.

“We are really disappointed in tonight’s result after how we played against Creighton last Sunday,” said head coach Erin Chastain.  “Marquette’s first goal was a great effort by Carrie [Madden], but we shouldn’t have given up the second score and lost our focus. This game has always been a tough rivalry as a lot of our players and their players were teammates on either high school or club level teams, and the physical play reflected that.  We’ve got another tough match this weekend.  We will take time this evening to watch Xavier play Butler and be ready for that match come Sunday.”

DePaul now heads to Cincinnati where the Blue Demons will face their BIG EAST rival Xavier on Sunday at noon.
