PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Another close game went the opposite way of the Blue Demons on Friday night.

In a season in which DePaul has been so close, so often, the women's soccer team came up short in a 1-0 BIG EAST Conference loss to Rutgers.

That was the 11th time the Blue Demons have been involved in a match decided by a single goal.

DePaul (3-10-1, 1-5-1 in the BIG EAST) came to Yurcak Field hoping to launch a late-season run, and the Blue Demons matched the Scarlet Knights shot for shot.

But in the 56th minute, Stefanie Scholz made a run in the box where Stefanee Pace found her with a 30-yard pass. Scholz deposited the ball in the top left of the DePaul net.

The Blue Demons went on the offensive trying to find the tying goal.

In a seven-minute span late in the second half, DePaul had three solid chances.

It began with Ashleigh Goddard's header in the 80th minute that was saved by Rutgers goalkeeper Jessica Janosz.

In the 85th minute, Arianna Foster took aim at the net, only to have Janosz turn her bid away. Just one minute and 15 seconds later, Rachel Pitman fired the potential tying goal that Janosz stopped.

In all, the Blue Demons had seven cracks at the Scarlet Knights' net but could not break through.

"Our team fought real hard until the final whistle, and two of our starting backs---Chelsea Grant and Sarah Gorden---were unavailable tonight," said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. "Despite that, I thought our back line played really well.

"Casey Mercurio stepped up and did a nice job at center back. The defense really limited Rutgers' dangerous chances.

"In the end, the lesson for our group is you have to score goals to win soccer games. We had several good chances but couldn't put them away."

DePaul continues BIG EAST play with a noon match on Sunday at Seton Hall.
