Blue Demons Draw with BIG EAST rival Xavier in 1-1 Double Overtime Contest

CINCINNATI, Ohio – On a rain-filled Sunday afternoon, the DePaul women’s soccer teamed earned a point in BIG EAST play as the Blue Demons pulled out a 1-1 double overtime draw with Xavier.

DePaul (5-7-2, 1-2-2 BIG EAST) broke the silence after 33 minutes of scoreless action.  On a set piece, senior Elizabeth Endy lifted a free kick into the middle of the box where Jessie Schmidt tapped in a header to the left side of the net to give the Blue Demons the 1-0 lead.  The strike was Schmidt’s first goal of 2017.

Both sides had four chances at goal in the first half, but the Blue Demons held tough to carry a 1-0 lead at the break.

In 82nd minute, Xavier (7-4-4, 3-0-2 BIG EAST) netted the equalizer to knot the game at 1-1.  Forward Tori Doss gathered a bouncing ball in the box and pushed the shot between the legs of DePaul’s goalkeeper Lauren Frasca to record her third goal of the year.

The Blue Demons, who outshot Xavier 14-13, had two scoring three scoring chances in the final two minutes of the second overtime, but each attempt was corralled by the Musketeer goalkeeper.

Head coach Erin Chastain reflected on the match, “I’m proud of the mentality of the group and certainly thought we had a couple of chances to win, but we will take the point on the road.”

DePaul returns to action Saturday, Oct. 11 where the Blue Demons will host Butler for Senior Day at Wish Field at 1 p.m.  On Saturday, DePaul will honor its 2017 senior class, including Alexa Ben, Kassandra Cerda, Lucy Edwards, Sonia Johnson, Endy, Frasca, and Schmidt.
