VILLANOVA, Pa. – On Friday afternoon, the DePaul and Villanova women’s soccer teams faced off hoping to gain an edge in the BIG EAST Conference standings, but after two overtime periods, the Blue Demons and Wildcats finished in a scoreless draw at the Villanova Soccer Complex.

DePaul (8-7-2, 3-4-1 BIG EAST) entered the match with a 3-4 conference record while Villanova 6-7-3, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) began the day at 4-3. This tough defensive matchup lived up to its billing as neither squad found the back of the net after 110 minutes of game action.

In the first half, DePaul held a 4-3 advantage in shots though Blue Demon goalkeeper, Megan Pyrz, and Wildcat keeper, Jami Kranich, made one save each.

It was in the second half, however, that Pyrz stole the show. With Villanova racking up a 10-3 advantage in shots, Pyrz turned away each of the Wildcats’ five shots on target. The sophomore net-minder upped her game when her teammates needed her most as the Blue Demon offense did not manage a shot on net in the frame.

Following regulation, Pyrz remained on point. The Wildcats blasted two more shots at the DePaul net, but Pyrz denied both in the first 10-minute overtime. The Blue Demons also added their fair share of firepower with Ashleigh Goddard and Sara Brathwaite each forcing Kranich to make a save.

In the final 10 minutes of extra time, neither squad managed to bury the golden goal. In that span, Pyrz rejected three more Villanova attempts to send the teams off with a 0-0 draw. It is Pyrz’s sixth shutout of the season and second shutout draw.

The Blue Demons’ conference weekend is not over, however, as they prepare for one of their toughest tests of the 2012 campaign—a noon matchup at No. 11 Georgetown.
