CHICAGO – On an ideal soccer kind of Sunday afternoon, DePaul gave one of the best teams in the country quite a run in the second half at Wish Field.

Unfortunately, the Blue Demons came up a little bit short in a 1-0 BIG EAST Conference loss to No. 20/10 Marquette that snapped their four-game winning streak.

In a first half dominated by the Golden Eagles, Marquette (14-3-0, 7-0-0) outshot the home team 18-3 and converted in the 44th minute on a shot from 25 yards out by Mary Luba into the upper 90. It was her seventh goal of the season. Marquette has won nine in a row.

DePaul (10-3-2, 4-2-1 in the BIG EAST) matched Marquette virtually shot-for-shot in the final 45 minutes and created more dangerous chances in and around the box.

“I was really happy with the second half the way we played against the No. 5 RPI team in the country,” said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. “We played kind of tentative in the first half and didn’t really assert ourselves. I just wanted to get to halftime so we could make some adjustments.

“In the second half we had our outside backs step up higher against their five midfielders. I thought that helped us create more dangerous chances to score. We didn’t give Marquette any real dangerous chances in the second half.”

Elise Wyatt hit a rocket of a shot in the second half that Marquette goalkeeper Amanda Engel leaped and deflected at the last moment. Rachel Pitman had several good opportunities on frame and Ana Greik had a shot on goal.

“Our back line played well, and Rachel did a nice job of getting shots and also putting some balls in behind the Marquette defense,” Chastain said. “On Senior Day, you saw our team chemistry and how they play so hard for each other.

“I was proud of the effort today. Our players showed they are deserving of their standing (third place) in the BIG EAST.”

The Blue Demons return to the pitch on Saturday with a 2 p.m. BIG EAST match at Xavier.
