Pekovitch the Difference-Maker in 1-0 Victory Over Xavier
Oct. 26, 2013
CINCINNATI - DePaul did just enough on Saturday to lock up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship tournament.
A 1-0 victory over Xavier on a goal by Erin Pekovitch in the 55th minute guarantees the Blue Demons will be hosting in the opening round.
"I'm happy that we got three points on the road," said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. "I'm also glad we are at least the No. 3 seed in the BIG EAST tournament and will be hosting in the first round. That means we've been taking care of business throughout the season.
"But I'm disappointed in our performance today because I thought Xavier (8-8-1, 1-7-0) outworked us. They created more dangerous chances than we did, and we struggled on their extremely tight field."
Pekovitch's second goal of the season helped DePaul improve to 11-3-2 on the season and 5-2-1 in the BIG EAST.
"It was a great ball," Chastain said. "Elise Wyatt dribbled across the center and the ball went to Erin. She hit a really hard shot that deflected across the goal line.
"Erin did a good job of keeping the ball for our team throughout the game."
All that's left for the Blue Demons is to finish strong in the Nov. 2 BIG EAST regular-season finale at St. John's.
"We'll take the three points, move on and get ready for a very good St. John's team," Chastain said.
