Women's Soccer Recruiting Class Ready to Attack
Feb. 7, 2013
CHICAGO – The DePaul women’s soccer recruiting class of 2013 is going to bring some firepower to Wish Field.
In announcing her class of incoming freshmen Ana Greik, Nikki Naclerio and Gini Yost, Blue Demon coach Erin Chastain noted the emphasis on offense.
“The strength of our team last season was our defending, so we have really focused on the attacking side of things with our 2013 class,” Chastain said. “We are extremely excited about our women's soccer signees. We feel we have filled our positional needs with the class and added great young women to our program.”
Greik is a superb athlete from Blair Academy in New Jersey, the same prep school that produced Bulls’ basketball star Luol Deng. Greik scored 17 goals her senior season and was first team All-State in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
She helped lead the girls’ basketball team to league and state prep championships the last three years and is team captain as a senior. In her four-year career, Blair is 66-9 with the current season still underway.
In the spring, Greik is a two-time, All-State shortstop on the softball team that has won Mid Atlantic Prep League and State Prep League titles.
“Ana is very opportunistic in front of the goal---she's a finisher and a fighter,” Chastain said. “She will make an immediate impact on our front line. To be as accomplished as Ana is in three sports at such a high level speaks to her athleticism, commitment and passion for competition.”
Naclerio is a proven winner, having led Palm Harbor University High School in Florida to the state championship in 2010 along with two regional titles, two district titles and three conference championships. She is most likely headed to her fourth time as an All-County selection.
In club soccer, Naclerio was chosen for the U-14 national pool and led the ECNL VSI Brandon Flames to the Southern Regional Finals in 2012. She competed on the RP3L East Champion team in 2011 and was a state runner-up four times.
“Nikki is an attacking midfielder who is extremely technical and savvy,” Chastain said. “She has a great mind for the game and will make an immediate impact in our midfield.
“She plays at a very high level for her high school and ECNL teams, so Nikki won't miss a beat when she joins us this fall. We look for her to play and add to our goal production.”
Yost is another big-time winner after leading Marian High School in Omaha, Neb. to the 2012 state championship. Yost’s club soccer team was the U-18 Nebraska State Cup Champion in 2012 and a U-17 Nebraska State Cup finalist in 2011.
Earlier in her high school career, she was honorable mention All-State at Alexander Dawson School in Lafayette, Colo. Yost played on the U-17 Colorado State Cup Champion team in 2010.
“Gini is a holding midfielder who we are very excited about,” Chastain said. “She's great in the air, has great positional awareness, and plays with a feisty edge to her game.
“Gini has some versatility as she could also play in an attacking mid role. Gini's club program is one of the best teams in the Midwest, and she really anchors the midfield for them."
In addition, three other soccer players have accepted admission to DePaul. Jessica Weaver is a second-team, All-State selection from New Trier who led the Trevians to a regional title in 2012. Bianca Perry played with Yost on the Omaha Elite club team and Danielle Pitaro is a versatile flank player from Glenbard South and Team Chicago---one of the top club teams in the country last year.
"We are excited to add so much quality depth to our group, and all of these players fit the mold of being great people, competitors and teammates," Chastain said. “All of these young women in our class of 2013 are wonderful people who are going to be positive, contributing members of our team.”
