Women's Soccer Announces 2003 Schedule
CHICAGO – DePaul women’s soccer coach John Wilson announced today the regular season schedule for the upcoming 2003 season. This fall, the Blue Demons will take on five NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago while playing a total of seven matches at Wish Field. DePaul begins the season with five of the first six matches on the road, but finishes with four of the final five regular season games on their home field.
“We are very excited about the upcoming fall schedule because it represents a big step forward in the competitiveness and strength of our competition,” said Wilson. “Conference USA always presents us with a chance to compete with the best teams in our region and nationally. But now, we are playing some of the best teams in our region and in the country in non-conference matches, and it truly presents us with an opportunity to show that we can compete with anyone. The schedule is designed to give us an opportunity to be ranked among the top teams in our region, and this is a goal we will accomplish this fall.”
Wilson’s squad is coming off the most successful season in the program’s seven-year history. The team set records a year ago for wins, shutouts, goals against average and goals scored. DePaul returns their top two scorers and a majority of the defensive backfield.
The Blue Demons’ season-opening two-game road trip begins with an Aug. 29 match at Nebraska. The Cornhuskers are coming off their seventh straight Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament after falling to eventual NCAA runner-up Santa Clara, 3-2. DePaul wraps up the trip with an Aug. 31 match at UW-Green Bay. The Blue Demons hold a 4-1-1 record all-time against the Phoenix.
DePaul’s first home match of the season is set for Sept. 5 against Toledo. Start time at Wish Field is scheduled for 4 p.m. Following that match, the club plays three straight road games at Iowa State (Sept. 7), Northern Iowa (Sept. 12) and Northwestern (Sept. 14). The month of September ends with four consecutive Conference USA contests. DePaul hosts Houston on the 19th and TCU on the 21st before traveling to Memphis and UAB the final weekend of the month.
The Memphis and UAB matches mark the start of six straight matches on the road. The first weekend of October sees the Blue Demons in Colorado as they take on Air Force (Oct. 3) and Colorado College (Oct. 5). On Oct. 10, DePaul travels to Charlotte to play the 49ers before taking on East Carolina on the 12th.
Cincinnati comes to Chicago for the first of four straight home matches for DePaul on Oct. 17. Following the Bearcats are the Louisville Cardinals at Wish Field on Oct. 19. The final home weekend of the regular season will have Marquette on Oct. 24 and Eastern Illinois on Oct. 26.
The final regular season match will be Nov. 1 at Saint Louis. The 2003 Conference USA Tournament will be in Tampa, Fla., Nov. 5-8. DePaul is looking to return to the league tourney for the first time since the 1997 season.
Prior to the season-opening match at Nebraska, the club will travel to Madison to play Wisconsin in an exhibition match on Aug. 23.
