Blue Demons Chosen to Finish Second in BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll
Aug. 10, 2017

Georgetown was unanimously picked to finish atop the BIG EAST women’s soccer standings this year as the league announced the 2017 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Hoyas, backed by BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Rachel Corboz, earned 81 possible points, receiving nine of the 10 first place votes. DePaul garnered runner-up honors with 70 points and one first place vote, edging Marquette (67 points).

DePaul, which split with Georgetown in the 2016 season, winning 4-1 in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 23 while falling to the Hoyas on penalty kicks in the BIG EAST tournament, enters the 2017 season as an experienced squad that lost just three starters from the 2016 season.  The Blue Demons went 10-6-3, holding a share of the BIG EAST regular season title with Marquette while posting a 7-2-0 mark in league play.

The Blue Demons have a trio of Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selections, including Lucy Edwards, Franny Cerny, and unanimous pick Alexa Ben.  Ben, who is the 2014 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, 2016 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, and two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, finished 2016 with seven goals and three assists (17 points), compiling five goals and one assist in BIG EAST play.

Cerny earned a spot on the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad as the Blue Demons’ top returning scorer, totaling 15 points off six goals and three assists in league play last season. Edwards dished out three assists for the Blue Demons in 2016 and aims to be a key contributor in the 2017 season.

The DePaul women's soccer program will kick off the 2017 season with a road exhibition scrimmage against Louisville on August 12 at 4 p.m. Following Sunday's match, DePaul will have six days to prepare for its season-opener on Saturday, Aug. 18 when the Blue Demons head to the north end of Chicago where they will face Northwestern in Evanston.

DePaul remains on the road for the next five matches until the Blue Demons return to Wish Field for their home opener on Sept. 8 against Pepperdine (Calif.) at 3:00 p.m.
