CHICAGO - Head coach Erin Chastain will lead the DePaul women’s soccer team into its 2017 regular season debut this weekend, playing two road matches in three days.

First, the Blue Demons will face Northwestern on Friday evening in Evanston and then will travel south to face Illinois on Sunday afternoon.

DePaul tuned up for its 2017 opener with an exhibition match against Louisville last week where the Blue Demons were edged 2-0.

The Blue Demons, who return eight of its 11 starters from the 2016 season, have a trio of Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selections, including Lucy Edwards, Franny Cerny, and unanimous pick Alexa Ben, leading the squad into Friday’s contest.  Ben, who is the 2014 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, 2016 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, and two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection, finished 2016 with seven goals and three assists (17 points), compiling five goals and one assist in BIG EAST play.

Twenty-third ranked Northwestern prepped for 2017 with two exhibition matches, falling to DePaul’s BIG EAST rival Butler 3-2 while drawing with No. 18 Notre Dame in a scoreless contest.  The Wildcats finished the 2016 season with a 16-3-4 record, qualifying for the NCAA tournament where they were edged by No. 14 Duke 1-0 in the Round of 16.  On August 14, Northwestern was picked to finish second in the Big Ten’s Preseason Poll.

The Wildcats are led by All-Big Ten preseason honorees Lauren Clem, Hannah Davison, and Kayla Sharples.  The trio headlines a defense that led the country with 17 shutouts in 2016, compiling a 0.29 goals against average in 23 matches.  NU leads the all-time series with DePaul 7-1-0, winning the last meeting 2-1 on Aug. 25, 2016.

Illinois kicks off its season against Missouri on Friday before hosting DePaul on Sunday, Aug. 20.  The Fighting Illini, who were picked to finish 10th in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches’ Poll, went 6-11-2 in 2016.

Sunday is the first-ever meeting between the Blue Demons and Illinois.

DePaul remains on the road for its next three matches until the Blue Demons return to Wish Field for their home opener on Sept. 8 against Pepperdine (Calif.) at 3:00 p.m.
