Northwestern Tops DePaul
CHICAGO – Playing the lone exhibition match prior to the start of the 2007, the DePaul women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Northwestern on Saturday. The Wildcats scored the game’s only goal in the 29th minute at Wish Field.
The two teams played an even first half with the Wildcats outshooting the Blue Demons, 6-4, in the period. Laura Janowitsch started the Northwestern goal as she found Shannon Schneeman on the left side of the net from 35 yards away. Her serve from the right side went into the box to Schneeman’s feet and she beat DePaul goalkeeper Brittni Lally and scored the eventual game-winner at 28:50.
DePaul had two late scoring chances in the first half as Callie Hemming made a run in the finals minutes, but was thwarted by Northwestern keeper Lauren Johnston. As Hemming entered the penalty box, Johnston left the goal and broke up the scoring opportunity. Jennifer Dyer gathered the ball off the deflection, but her shot sailed over the crossbar as Johnston tried to recover.
DePaul’s second scoring opportunity came on the half’s final play when Stefanie Foley took a free kick and found Dyer in the penalty area. However, Dyer’s header went directly to Johnston just two seconds before the horn.
In the second half, the Blue Demons managed three shots and nearly tied the match midway through the period. With 30 minutes left in regulation, consecutive shots by DePaul’s Tara Evangelist and Dominique Locascio were knocked away by Carolyn Edwards to preserve the shutout for the Wildcats.
Lally and Kelsey Hoinkes split time in goal for DePaul and combined for nine saves. Lally stopped three shots in the first half while Hoinkes was credited with six second-half saves. The Blue Demons attempted six corner kicks to three attempts for the Wildcats while Northwestern outshot DePaul, 15-7.
The Blue Demons begin the 2007 season next weekend at the Cleveland State Fall Classic. DePaul takes on Ohio in the opener on Friday before playing host Cleveland State on Sunday afternoon.
