Blue Demons Fall In Home Opener
On a hot and humid afternoon, the DePaul women's soccer team opened the home portion of the 2000 schedule against the Eastern Illinois Panthers. After taking the early 1-0 lead, the Blue Demons allowed a pair of second half goals to fall 2-1 to the Panthers. Courtney Hannel scored the match's first goal at the 16:27 to put the Blue Demons ahead 1-0. Hannel took the ball on the right side off a pass from Andrea Toth and sent it into the net from eight yards out. It was Hannel's first goal of the season as well as Toth's first assist. The match stayed at 1-0 until Eastern Illinois tied the score at the 55:33 mark. Beth Liesen scored on an assist from Wendee Hoffman. Those two combined for the Panthers second goal at the 62:09 mark with Hoffman scoring and Liessen getting credit for the assist. "We played our best match of the season today," said head coach John Wilson. "One of our goals is to play better each match. We also did a better job of playing with a higher level of intensity throughout the game. We're pleased with the effort, but not satisfied." With temperatures in the low 90's, both teams battled fatigue and the humidity throughout the match. "I was proud of the endurance in the heat and humidity," said Wilson. "They continued to battle and battle. The difference in the match was that we made a couple of mistakes and had difficulty finishing."
The Blue Demons will take the field on Wednesday night at Loyola-Chicago. The match is set for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
