Blue Demons Fall at Drake
DES MOINES, Iowa – A late goal by Drake proved to be the game-winner as the Bulldogs topped the Blue Demons, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Goalkeeper Cara LaRocca registered a career-best 12 saves in the match for the Blue Demons.
With time winding down, Drake (2-1-1) took advantage of a corner kick opportunity to tally the game-winner. After a serve into the box from the corner, the ball bounced around and found the foot of Melissa Nelson. Nelson sent the shot in and it crossed the goal line at 87:07.
Drake outshot DePaul, 15-9, on the afternoon with LaRocca totaling a dozen saves. The Bulldogs also attempted all seven of their corner kick changes in the second period with DePaul (1-2-1) taking three in the first half and one in the second half.
"The team was mentally tough and we played well in the first half. Drake had some good saves and we had some unlucky finishes," said head coach John Wilson. "I'm proud of the team for dealing with a pair of road games and the experiences of travel this weekend. We're looking forward to getting back home for Friday's match."
DePaul returns to Wish Field on Friday afternoon for a match against Southeast Missouri State. Kickoff with the Redhawks is set for 4 p.m. The Blue Demons follow that match with a Sunday afternoon match at Northern Illinois.
Match Notes: Cara LaRocca's 12 saves bettered her previous career best of 11 stops against Northwestern in the first match of the season… the shutout at Drake was the first game this season that the Blue Demons didn't find the net… Sunday was the first meeting between the two programs.
