Women's Soccer Tops Louisville

    Sunday, September 17 was a day of firsts for the Blue Demons as they won their first league game and, in the process, registered the first shutout of the year. DePaul used three first half goals and strong play by Marissa Czapka and Lauren Geiger in goal for the 3-0 victory.

    The Blue Demons pressured the Cardinals in the first half and jumped to a 2-0 lead within the first 20 minutes. Senior Jeannette Croce scored the match's first goal in the 17th minute and was followed by Tammy Howe with a score at 19:52. Croce's goal was the first of the season for her and 12th of her career. Howe is among team leaders this season with two goals. The Blue Demons outshot Louisville 13-5 in the first half.

    Katie Hawkins tallied her first goal of the year and gave the Blue Demons the 3-0 lead in the 26th minute. Stephanie Cox got the ball to Croce and she fired a one-touch pass to Hawkins for the score.

    In goal, Czapka and Geiger combined for the first Blue Demon shutout since October 24, 1999 against Tulane.

    DePaul is now 2-5 overall and 1-1 Conference USA play while Louisville dropped to 1-7 and 0-2 in league play. Up next for the Blue Demons is Memphis on Friday at 7 p.m. From there, the Blue Demons will move on to UAB for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
